I’ve posted on this subject once before, but this post is more of an ‘opinions wanted’ type of post, to allow my visitors to comment and express their opinion on the subject.
It is reported more than 100 people per week are hospitalised due to dog bite type injuries in the UK. Now I’m unsure if these figures are accurate, but one thing I do know is ‘attacks’ from dogs are becoming more and more common.
So my questions to you are simple:
- Who is to blame? - Are you a member of the public who believes some dogs are just born aggressive and it is in their nature? Or do you believe nurture is the problem and it is owners who are to blame?
- What can or should be done? – There are many possible options which could potentially work such as dog licensing, compulsory micro chipping etc. but do you have a different idea? do you agree, that every dog that bites or ‘attacks’ as they put it, should be destroyed? do you think that every owner who’s dog is deemed dangerous, should receive a tougher punishment?
- Should certain dog breeds be banned? - As many people are aware, one of the most popular breeds of dog that we hear about attacking people, is the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Many people are also aware that this breed has a tendency to get into the wrong hands and is constantly bred irresponsibly, making more staffies than there are homes for. Is this why we hear so much of staffy attacks, or do you think this breed is dangerous anyway and is another type that should be banned?
I’m interested in your opinions to all of these questions and also anything else you feel is relevant to add. The purpose for this post is mainly curiosity, but I also believe that if the majority of us agree on the same answers then perhaps, we are a loud enough voice to make a change.

I have looked at a few articles and blogs on this subject. A lot of people take it personal if they have a specific breed of dog. I think a simple solution would be a law which ensures that all dogs have muzzles when outside the house no matter what the breed. No one can claim they are being targeted and all people and other animals will be safe as muzzled dogs cannot bite. Attacks at home – a bit more dificult but everyone has a choice.
A very insightful article, I’m really glad you shared. I believe without a doubt that’s a mixture of nature and nurture. A dog is born possibly prone to being aggressive, but I takes a neglectful owner to really bring that side out in the dog. I think there should definitely be stricter controls on who can own a pet.
One thing that I try to do is donate regularly to my local animal charity, and invest what spare time I have into the local animal shelter. Every little helps in the end! Keep up the good work.
